Several years ago, my family was in Eastern Europe. We took a train from Vilnius to Minsk. It was astonishing, and very sobering, to observe how everyone in our train car changed from enjoying conversations with their companions to almost total silence after we were checked through.
Yes, the entire train is stopped at the border and Belarusian guards board and check everyone's papers quite thoroughly. I'm sure it's gotten worse since our visit.
