William Lundigan, Dorothy Patrick, Jeff Corey, Nestor Paiva, Charles D. Brown, Paul Guilfoyle. Well-crafted and blessedly short police procedural, and the oldest serial killer flick I can think of besides 1931’s M. The two leads are stiffs (imagine, say, Sterling Hayden and Barbara Stanwyck as the respective cop and tabloid reporter), but some of the colorful supporting characters suggest Preston Sturges himself may have had a hand in the casting. And the movie has just enough weird shit to demand a second viewing.
